Congress ends FAA shutdown
The U.S. Senate approved a Federal Aviation Administration bill on Friday, a temporary measure that restored funding to the organization and put 4,000 FAA employees back to work on Monday. The funding extension expires Sept. 16. "There's still work to do so we can get a long-term FAA bill," wrote transportation secretary Ray LaHood in the Department of Transportation's official blog. "But I'm optimistic that, with so many jobs on the line in these tough economic times, Congress can work out its differences." The FAA now has the authority to again collect taxes on airline tickets, something it hadn't been able to do since July 23.
