Warning issued on some GE jet engine seals

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said today seals on some General Electric turbofan engines should be replaced.

It cited a 2004 fatal crash of a Bombardier regional jet in Missouri when the engines flamed out as the pilots tried to guide the aircraft to an airport.

The FAA said the seal can shrink in cold high-altitude air, causing the rotors to lock up.

GE said it is replacing the seals on 2,722 engines during maintenance.
