Canada may scrap plans to launch the assembly of Q400 aircraft in Russia
The plans for establishing a joint venture in Russia for assembly of Q400 aircraft may be scrapped in connection with the events taking place in Ukraine, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to the president of Bombardier Inc. (Canada), Pierre Beaudoin. According to him, the government plans to follow the lead of USA in terms of imposing economic sanctions against Russia. "At present we are going to postpone the establishment of this JV in connection with the events taking place in Ukraine, - Beaudoin noted. – We will definitely keep up with the sanctions whatever they are". On the other hand, he admitted that “today no one knows the potential amount of sanctions”. "We have been negotiating with our Russian partners on implementing these plans in 2014", - he said, adding that now it is hard to set any start date for the project. It was reported in late August 2013 that Bombardier and Rostec State Corporation signed a preliminary agreement for purchase of 100 Q400 airliners at MAKS-2013 airshow (held in Zhukovsky, Moscow Region). It was expected that subsidiary of Rostec, Avia Capital Services leasing company, will deliver 50 turboprops of the type assembled in Canada to Russia. The contract will be firmed only after establishing the JV in Ulyanovsk Region. At least 50 more aircraft of the type should be assembled in Russia. In case of implementation of this contract the Canadian manufacturer will earn about $3,4 billion. On March 7th, Vice Prime Minister, Dmitry Rogozin questioned the feasibility of this project. He expressed doubts over the feasibility of the project in his Twitter after hearing the news about the decision to remove all the Russian military personnel from the country. "Is it so rewarding to launch the production of Bombardier aircraft in Russia? Maybe we should choose a European analogue? Or maybe our aircraft industry will finally start developing and manufacturing advance competitive airliners?", - he tweeted.
